With the start of the brand new year just behind us, it's not too late to think about resolutions on how you want to improve and be a better manager in 2018. While there is never a bad time to set new goals, the beginning of the year provides the perfect time to reflect and gather yourself after surviving a busy holiday season. If you aren't sure where to start, here are some smart resolutions that will help you become a rockstar bar manager in 2018:

1. Start practicing a little kindness and make it a point to let people know when they are doing a good job. It is easy to find something to say when things aren't quite going right. Making corrections and getting employees back on track is a part of your job after all, but if all everyone hears is criticism, it can really do a number on employee morale. Be more conscious about not only mentally noting when an employee goes above and beyond, but actually acknowledging their work. You might be amazed to see what a difference it makes.

2. Stop micro-managing people. If you do an effective job of recruiting, hiring, and putting your team through a comprehensive training process, then you should feel confident in their ability to execute their tasks. Do yourself and them a favor and allow everyone to fulfill their role without constantly looking over their shoulder. You will be less stressed, and they will thrive.

3. Create team building activities for everyone. Some people hate the idea of having to spend more time with their co-workers outside of work, so think about making events both casual and optional. Team building doesn't mean that you need to ship everyone off to a ropes course in the wilderness for the weekend. An easy-going game night or happy hour can be enough to bring people together and allow them to cut loose a little. The more co-workers view each other as people with their own lives, the more understanding they will be of one another in the work environment.

4. Find ways for employees to learn new skills and take on more responsibility. One of the best ways to improve retention is to help employees feel invested in the business. While some of the bartenders may just need a job for certain period of time, others may be open to building a career in the industry. Don't just be a manager, be a mentor who helps others grow.

5. Pay attention to your own work/life balance. A happy manager will translate into happy employees and a better business. If you have been running yourself ragged by staying up late closing the bar every night and doing inventory, chances are that both your physical and mental health have been put on the back burner. Don't forget to take care of yourself. Not only will you feel happier and healthier, but you will also be more productive at work and create an example for others.

Once you stop micro-managing, you might find that you have more time for yourself or focus your efforts on improving and growing the bar. If you find it impossible to turn over responsibilities, you might have to consider hiring some more experienced and trustworthy employees.
